Economic surplus facts for kids
An economic surplus happens when people who buy things (consumers) and people who sell things (producers) both get a good deal in the economy. It's like the extra happiness or benefit they get from trading goods and services.
There are two main types of economic surplus:
- Consumer surplus
- Producer surplus

What is Consumer Surplus?
Consumer surplus is the extra benefit or "gain" that consumers get when they buy a product for less than the highest price they were willing to pay. Imagine you want a new video game, and you're ready to spend $60 on it. But then you find it on sale for $40! The $20 you saved is your consumer surplus. It's the difference between what you were willing to pay and what you actually paid.
This happens because sellers often set prices lower than what some people are willing to pay, to attract more buyers. So, if you're one of those people who would have paid more, you get a bonus!
What is Producer Surplus?
Producer surplus is the extra benefit or "gain" that producers get when they sell a product for more than the lowest price they were willing to accept. Think of a baker who makes delicious cookies. They might be willing to sell a cookie for $1 to cover their costs and make a small profit. But if people love their cookies so much that they can sell them for $2 each, that extra $1 per cookie is their producer surplus.
This happens because the market price for a product is often higher than the minimum price a producer needs to sell it for. The difference between the market price and the lowest price they would accept is their producer surplus. It's like getting an unexpected bonus for their hard work.
Why are Surpluses Important?
Economic surpluses are important because they show how much value is created in a market. When both consumers and producers have a surplus, it means the market is working well and creating benefits for everyone involved. It helps economists understand how efficient a market is and how much overall happiness or wealth it generates.
