Discovering a Passion: The Story of Eddie's Cook-Off
Eddie Ogden is a 14-year-old who plays baseball for the Groundhogs. His dad coaches the team and has big dreams for Eddie's baseball future. After games, Eddie loves to make "Eddie Dogs" for his friends.
Even though he enjoys baseball, Eddie starts to love cooking. He gets inspired by watching the famous chef Bobby Flay on The Food Network.
When it's time to pick classes, Eddie tells his friends, D.B. and Frankie, to choose computer science. He thinks it will be an easy class. But then Eddie sees the home economics classroom. He decides he wants to try it instead.
Eddie cleverly convinces D.B. and Frankie to sign up for home economics too. So, all three friends end up in the cooking class together.
A Secret Dream and Big Choices
At first, Eddie and his friends often mess around in class. But Eddie soon learns about a huge cooking contest. It's called the "Million Dollar Cook-Off." Winning could send him to a special cooking school.
Eddie secretly signs up for the contest. He is worried about what his friends and family will think. Surprisingly, his mom finds out and supports his cooking dream.
When the teacher announces the finalists, everyone is shocked that Eddie won a spot. His friends and brothers tease him a lot. Kids at school also make fun of him.
Eddie starts spending more time cooking and less time on baseball. His dad is very disappointed when he learns about the cook-off. Eddie feels torn between pleasing his dad and following his new dream.
He faces teasing and humiliation from almost everyone. He even loses his friends, except for Hannah. She understands what it's like to not meet a parent's expectations.
The Big Day: Baseball or Cooking?
The final baseball game and the cook-off are on the same day. Eddie has to choose between them. He stops by the cook-off building and sees his idol, Bobby Flay, is hosting the event.
Eddie decides to go to the baseball game for his dad and friends. But he can't focus on the game. His friends see how upset he is. They finally accept that he loves cooking.
They tell him to go to the cook-off and let them win the game on their own. With his friends' support, Eddie and his mom leave for the cook-off. His dad is stunned by this decision.
Eddie arrives an hour late to the cook-off. He has no one to help him, but he is determined to do his best. His friends watch the cook-off on a small TV in the dugout. They see Eddie struggling because he has less time.
After hearing this, and seeing Hannah's mom finally supporting her, Eddie's dad makes a big choice. He purposely gets himself kicked out of the baseball game. He rushes to help Eddie at the cook-off.
A Family United
Eddie is surprised to see his dad, but his dad helps a lot. Together, they finish the cook-off just in time. Eddie doesn't win the contest.
But when Frankie asks Bobby Flay about it, Bobby says he thinks Eddie should have won. Eddie's dad now fully supports him. He tells Eddie that he will support him no matter what he does.
Even Eddie's brothers show up to support him after watching the cook-off on TV. Meanwhile, Eddie's baseball team wins the game without him. His best friend, D.B., finally gets a hit to help them win.
Later, Eddie and his friends celebrate at his house. Bridget Simon, who won the cook-off, also comes. She seems to share her trophy with Eddie.
