The Eddie Mae Herron Center & Museum is a very important building located at 1708 Archer Street in Pocahontas, Arkansas. It started its life with two main purposes. First, it was a church called St. Mary's AME Church. Second, it was a school known as the Pocahontas Colored School.
This building is made of wood and has a simple design. It has a pointed roof and a small addition on one side. The front of the building has two doors, each with a small roof over it. It was built in 1918 to serve the small African-American community in Pocahontas.
A Place for Learning and Worship
For about 30 years, the building was used as a church. It was a place where people could gather for worship and community events. For 50 years, it also served as a school. This was a very important place for children to learn.
After its time as a church and school, the building was used for other things. More recently, it became a museum and a community center. This means it helps people learn about the past and provides a place for the community to meet.
Honoring a Special Teacher
The building is now named after a special teacher, Eddie Mae Herron. She taught at the Biggers School District. When the Biggers Colored School closed, Ms. Herron moved to Pocahontas.
From 1948 to 1965, Eddie Mae Herron was the only teacher at the Pocahontas Colored School. She taught many students during those years. Her dedication made a big difference in the lives of the children she taught.
In 2002, this historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. It was recognized as the St. Mary's AME Church—Pocahontas Colored School.
