A Look Back: History of Eden Mill

The Eden Mill Nature Center has a long and interesting past. It wasn't always a nature center.

From Gristmill to Power Plant

Long ago, in the 1800s, Eden Mill was a busy gristmill. A gristmill is a place where grain, like wheat, is ground into flour. People would bring their crops to the mill to be processed. The name "Eden Mill" comes from a person known as Father Eden.

Later, in 1917, the mill changed. It became a power plant! Workers updated the dam to help make electricity. This was an important step for the local community. The site kept working as a mill until 1964.

Becoming a Nature Center

In 1991, Harford County bought the property. They wanted to turn it into a wonderful park for everyone to enjoy. Since then, it has grown into the Eden Mill Nature Center we know today. It's a place where kids and adults can learn about nature. It also helps protect the local environment.
