Lieutenant Edgar George Davies DFC* was a brave British pilot during World War I. He was born on November 4, 1898, and sadly passed away on February 6, 1919. He became known as a flying ace, which means he was officially credited with shooting down ten enemy planes or observation balloons in air battles.

Early Life of Edgar George Davies

Edgar George Davies was born in London, England, in 1898. His birthplace was either Tufnell Park or Islington. Before he joined the military, he worked as a butcher. He first joined the Royal Field Artillery, which was a part of the army that used big guns.

World War I Service

Edgar left school to join the Queen's Westminsters, another army group. On his 19th birthday, November 4, 1917, he moved to the Royal Flying Corps. This was the air force of the time. He learned to fly at the Grahame-White School. He earned his pilot's certificate on May 11, 1918.

He joined No. 29 Squadron RAF on September 1, 1918. This is where he became a flying ace. His first victory was on September 16. He continued to fight bravely, and his last victory was on November 10, just one day before the war ended. In total, he destroyed nine enemy planes and one observation balloon.

After the War

Sadly, Edgar George Davies died in a flying accident after the war ended. He was serving with the Army of Occupation in Germany. He was trying a fast roll maneuver over Bickendorf Airfield. His plane, an SE.5a, broke apart in the air, and he sadly died.

Two days after his death, on February 8, 1919, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. This award was for his bravery in the air. He also received the Belgian Croix de guerre on July 15, 1919.

Edgar George Davies is buried in the Cologne Southern Cemetery in Cologne, Germany. His grave is in plot I.D.15.
