Edgar George Brown was born in 1898. He grew up to become a strong voice for change. He believed that all people should be treated equally, no matter their background.

A Champion on the Tennis Court

Before becoming a well-known civil rights leader, Edgar Brown was a fantastic tennis player. He was a four-time champion of the American Tennis Association. He won titles in 1922, 1923, 1928, and 1929. People knew him for his amazing "topspin" shots, which made the ball spin fast. He also helped start the National Lawn Tennis Association. This group helped organize tennis for African American players.

Fighting for Equal Rights

Edgar Brown was a key figure in the civil rights movement. He worked hard to end unfair treatment. He was part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Black Cabinet." This was an informal group of African American advisors who helped the President. They worked to make sure the voices of Black Americans were heard in government.

Brown also helped create the National Negro Council. This organization worked to improve life for African Americans. He was also involved with the United Government Employees Union. This union helped workers get fair treatment.

One famous moment happened in July 1941. Edgar Brown bravely held a one-person sit-down strike. This happened at a coffee shop in Washington National Airport. He was refused service because he was Black. He sat down and refused to leave until he was served. This action showed his strong commitment to fighting against unfair rules.
