Sandoval /sænˈdvəl/ is a small town in Marion County, Illinois, United States. In 2020, about 1,157 people lived there. It's a place with a rich history and an interesting location.

History of Sandoval

Early Days and Founding

Long ago, the area where Sandoval now stands was a busy meeting point. Important Indian trails crossed here. A man named Sandoval was the first to set up a trading post. This trading post helped the area grow. The town of Sandoval was officially started in 1859.

Sandoval During the Civil War

Many Civil War soldiers passed through Sandoval. It was also a place where people could join the army. The 40th Illinois Infantry regiment was formed here in 1861. About 700 soldiers camped in Sandoval before heading off to war. They fought in many battles, including with General Sherman on his famous "March to the Sea." They also took part in a big parade in Washington D.C. after the war. General Ambrose E. Burnside and his troops also camped here. They were on their way to help General Grant.

Railroads and Highways

Sandoval was once a very important transportation hub. Two major railroads crossed through the town. The B & O railroad ran from east to west. The Illinois Central railroad ran from north to south.

Today, Sandoval is located where two major US Highways meet. These are U.S. Route 50 and U.S. Route 51. When these highways were first planned, this spot was seen as the central meeting point. It was where the main north-south route met the main east-west route. US Highway 50 is even an extension of the historic Mason-Dixon line. This line once divided the northern and southern parts of the United States.

Sandoval's Unique Location

For a long time in the 1900s, Sandoval was considered the population center of the United States. This means it was the middle point if you looked at where everyone in the country lived. Because of its central spot, people thought Sandoval was very important. There was even a plan to make Sandoval a new capital city, like Washington, D.C.! They even set aside land for buildings like the White House.

A Note on History

In the 1890s, Sandoval had rules that were unfair to African Americans. These rules prevented them from living or staying in the town. This was a common issue in some towns during that time.
