History of Edinample Castle
The land where Edinample Castle stands was given to a man named Colin Campbell in 1547. He was the 6th Laird (or lord) of Glenorchy. His son, known as 'Black' Sir Duncan Campbell, probably built the castle around the year 1584. He was the first Baronet of Glenorchy.
What Edinample Castle Looks Like
Edinample Castle is built in a special style called a Z-plan tower house. This means it has a main rectangular part with towers at opposite corners, making a 'Z' shape. It might even include an older tower on its eastern side.
Main Building and Towers
The main part of the castle is shaped like a rectangle. It is about 13 meters (43 feet) long and 8 meters (27 feet) wide. This main section has three floors plus an attic.
At the second-floor level, there are small, round towers called bartizans. These stick out from the north and south corners. There are also two larger, round towers at the northwestern and southeastern corners. These towers are about 7 meters (23 feet) across and have four floors.
Changes Over Time
Around 1790, the inside of the castle and its roofs were updated. Later, in the 18th or 19th century, a two-story porch and staircase were added to the north side. In 1870, a small, U-shaped building made of corrugated iron was put up on the eastern side. This was likely used as an office.
In the early 1900s, a five-story addition was built. This new part completely surrounded the southeastern tower. By the 1960s, the castle was falling apart. However, from about 1968 to 1998, different owners worked to fix it up. They turned it into a private family home. During this renovation, most of the newer additions, except for the office, were taken down.
