Edmand Lara Montaño (born on October 16, 1985), also known as Capitán Lara, is a Bolivian politician, lawyer, and activist. He is currently the Vice President of Bolivia. He and President Rodrigo Paz Pereira won the election on October 19, 2025. Their team had also placed first in the first round of voting on August 17, 2025.
Before becoming Vice President, Edmand Lara served for 15 years in the Bolivian National Police. He reached the rank of captain. He left the police after speaking out about problems and unfair practices he believed were happening. This experience led him to become an activist. His efforts to speak up against wrongdoing helped him become well-known and led him into politics.

Early Life and Education
Edmand Lara Montaño was born in Villa Rivero, a town in the Cochabamba Department of Bolivia. Later, his family moved to Santa Cruz de la Sierra.
He completed his studies at the National Police Academy in 2007. In 2024, he earned a law degree through distance learning from the Bolivarian Union University in La Paz.
Police Career and Activism
Speaking Out and Leaving the Police
While working as a police officer, Edmand Lara spoke out about issues he observed. After he shared his concerns, he faced difficulties. He believed these issues were a response to his efforts to report wrongdoing.
During this time, his health was monitored by the Ombudsman's Office. This organization helps protect people's rights. A court later allowed him to go free, but with certain rules he had to follow. He was also asked not to post videos on TikTok for a while.

Running for Vice President in 2025
In May 2025, Edmand Lara joined Senator Rodrigo Paz Pereira as his running mate. A running mate is a candidate who runs together with another candidate on the same ticket. They were candidates for president and vice president for the August general election. They represented the Christian Democratic Party.
In the first round of elections on August 17, their team surprisingly won the most votes. This meant they moved on to a second round of voting on October 19. In this final round, they faced another team from the Libre alliance.
Many news groups believed that Edmand Lara's involvement was a big reason for their success. The Associated Press described him as a "social media savvy ex-police captain." His supporters saw him as a bold leader willing to stand up to problems.
Nueva Sociedad magazine called him "the people's viral candidate." He connected well with many people through his TikTok messages about daily life. He also traveled across the country with Rodrigo Paz, gaining a lot of popular support.
On November 8, 2025, Edmand Lara officially became the Vice President of Bolivia.

Edmand Lara is married to Diana Romero Saavedra. She was also elected as a representative for the Santa Cruz department in the 2025 election.
