Edmond Castle is a large building from the 1800s. It is located north of the village of Hayton, Carlisle, in England. The story of Edmond Castle is closely linked to the Graham family, who owned it for a long time.
Today, Edmond Castle is the home of Philip Day. He is the owner of the Edinburgh Woollen Mill clothing store chain.
History of Edmond Castle
Edmond Castle has a rich history. It has changed hands many times and served different purposes over the years.
Building the Castle
The castle was first made bigger and redesigned between 1824 and 1829. This work was done for Thomas Graham. The famous architect Sir Robert Smirke created the plans. Later, between 1844 and 1846, it was made even larger. These new designs were by Sydney Smirke.
A Home for Many
In 1937, T. H. B. Graham passed away. His son, Eric Graham, then inherited the castle. In the late 1930s, Eric Graham sold Edmond Castle and all its land. It was bought by Henry Studholme Cartmell and Stanley Walton.
Around June 1940, the castle was used to house people from other countries who needed a safe place to stay. After that, Edmond Castle became a special school for young people who needed guidance. It later became a hotel. In 2005, a property developer named David Dyke bought the castle.
