Edmond Graile was born in Gloucester, England, around the year 1577. He became known for his writing and his work as a doctor during a time when England was seeing many new ideas and discoveries.
Early Life and Education
When he was about 15 years old, Edmond Graile joined Magdalen College, Oxford, in February 1593. This is called "matriculating" at a university. He studied hard and earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), in 1595. Later, in 1600, he completed his Master of Arts (M.A.) degree.
After finishing his studies, Graile became a physician, which is another word for a doctor. He worked at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in Gloucester. This shows he had skills in both writing and medicine.
His Famous Book: Little Timothie
Edmond Graile's most well-known work is a book of poetry titled Little Timothie, his Lesson, a Summarie relation of the Historicall part of Holy Scripture, plainely and familiarly comprized in meeter. This long title tells us a lot about the book!
What is "Little Timothie"?
The book was first published in London in 1611. It was written to explain parts of the Bible's history in a simple and easy-to-understand way, using poetry. The words "plainely and familiarly comprized in meeter" mean it was written clearly and in verse, like a poem.
Graile dedicated his book to the leaders of St. Bartholomew's Hospital in Gloucester. This was the hospital where he worked as a doctor. The book also included special poems written for Sir William Throckmorton and his wife.
Later Editions of the Book
Little Timothie was popular enough to be printed again. A "third impression," which means a third edition, was released in 1632. This new version included extra prayers written by Graile himself. Today, the only known copy of this 1632 edition is kept at the famous British Museum in London.
