Edmond Papinot facts for kids
Jacques Edmond-Joseph Papinot (1860–1942) was a French Catholic priest and missionary. In Japan, people knew him as Father Papino (パピノ神父). He was a very talented person. He worked as an architect, a teacher, a historian, and an editor. He also studied Japan deeply, which is called a Japanologist.
Father Papinot is most famous for his book. It was called the Historical and Geographical Dictionary of Japan. He first published it in French in 1899. Later, an English version came out in 1906.
Early Life
Jacques Papinot was born in 1860. His hometown was Châlons-sur-Saône in France.
In 1886, he became a Catholic priest. Just three months after that, he was sent on a special mission. He traveled all the way to Japan.
Papinot's Work in Japan
Father Papinot arrived in Japan in 1886. He taught at the Tokyo Theological Seminary. This was a school for religious studies. He taught there for 15 years.
During this time, he worked on his big dictionary. Its full name was Dictionnaire japonais-français des noms principaux de l'histoire et de la géographie de Japon. This book helped people understand Japanese history and places.
In 1911, he left Japan. He moved to China for a while. Later, in 1920, he returned to his home country, France.
