Becoming the Earl of Kent
Edmund became the Earl of Kent in 1331. He inherited this important title from his father, Edmund of Woodstock, 1st Earl of Kent. His mother was Margaret Wake, 3rd Baroness Wake of Liddell.
His father had faced some serious difficulties, which meant he lost his title. However, in 1330, his mother asked for his father's name to be cleared. This request was granted, and young Edmund was officially recognized as the Earl of Kent.
A Short Life and Legacy
Sadly, Edmund died very soon after becoming Earl. He was only about five years old when he passed away on October 5, 1331.
Because he was so young, his title passed to his even younger brother. His brother, John, 3rd Earl of Kent, was only one year old at the time.
John later died when he was 22 years old. After John's death, the title of Earl of Kent was not immediately passed on. It was held in a special state by their sister, Joan of Kent.
Later, a new Earldom of Kent was created. This new title was given to Joan's first husband, Thomas Holland, 1st Earl of Kent.
