Sir Edmund Cradock-Hartopp, 1st Baronet (born 21 April 1749 – died 10 June 1833) was an important British figure. He held the title of a baronet and was also a politician. A baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family. As a politician, he helped make decisions for his country.

Early Life and Family Name

Edmund Cradock-Hartopp was born as Edmund Bunney. His parents were Joseph Bunney and Mary Cradock. He was born in a place called Freathby in Leicestershire, England.

In 1777, Edmund married a woman named Anne. Her father was Joseph Hurlock, who was a governor in a place called Bencoolen. He was also a director of the East India Company, which was a very powerful trading company.

When Edmund married Anne, he changed his last name. He added "Cradock" from his mother's family and "Hartopp" from his wife's mother's family. This name change was required by the wills of his maternal uncle and his wife's maternal grandfather. It was a way to make sure he inherited their property and titles.

Public Service and Achievements

Edmund Cradock-Hartopp served in several important roles. In 1781, he was the High Sheriff of Leicestershire. A High Sheriff was a royal officer responsible for law and order in a county.

Later, he became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Leicestershire. He served in this role from 1798 to 1806. An MP is someone elected by the people to represent them in the country's government.

In 1792, he bought a large house called Four Oaks Hall in Sutton Coldfield. He even served as the Warden of Sutton Coldfield for a short time in 1823.

In 1796, he was given the special title of a baronet. This meant he became the first of the Cradock-Hartopp baronets.

Later Life

Sir Edmund Cradock-Hartopp passed away in Bristol in 1833. His eldest son, also named Edmund, took over his title and responsibilities.
