Sir Edmund Denton, 1st Baronet (born 1676 – died 1714), was an important English politician. He came from Hillesden in Buckinghamshire. He was a member of the Whig party. Sir Edmund served in the English and British Parliaments from 1698 to 1713.

Sir Edmund Denton's Early Life

Edmund Denton was born on October 25, 1676. He was the oldest son of Alexander Denton. His father was also a Member of Parliament (MP) for Buckingham. Edmund's mother was Esther Herman.

The Denton family was from Cumberland. They had been given a special estate called Hillesden by King Edward IV. This shows their family had a long history.

Edmund went to Wadham College, Oxford in 1695. He later studied law at Middle Temple in 1697. After his father passed away in 1698, Edmund took over his family's responsibilities.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In 1698, Edmund Denton became a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented the area of Buckingham. An MP is a person chosen to speak for the people in the government.

Edmund had an older brother named Alexander. Alexander later became a judge.

A Special Title: Baronet

On May 12, 1699, Edmund Denton received a special title. He was made a baronet of Hillesden. A baronet is a hereditary title, like a knight, but it can be passed down in the family.

He continued to be an MP for Buckingham until 1708. After that, he became an MP for Buckinghamshire. He held this seat until 1713.

Family and Later Years

Sir Edmund Denton married Mary Rowe. She was the eldest daughter of Anthony Rowe, who was also an MP. Mary brought a large sum of money, £10,000, into the marriage.

Sir Edmund and Mary did not have any children. Sir Edmund Denton passed away on May 4, 1714. He was only 37 years old. Because he had no children, his baronet title ended when he died.

Mary, his wife, lived longer than him. She later married Trevor Hill, who became the 1st Viscount Hillsborough.
