Jacques Edmund-Joseph Papinot (born 1860, died 1942) was a French Roman Catholic priest. He was also a scholar, a historian, and an expert on Japan.

He is most famous for writing a big book called the Historical and Geographical Dictionary of Japan. This book helped many people learn about Japan's history and places. It first came out in French in 1899 and then in English in 1906.

Papinot's Journey and Work

Jacques Papinot first traveled to Japan in 1886. He taught at the Tokyo Theological Seminary for 15 years. While teaching, he also worked on his important dictionary about Japan. The full French title of this dictionary was Dictionnaire japonais-français des noms principaux de l'histoire et de la géographie de Japon.

In 1911, he left Japan and moved to China. Later, in 1920, he returned to his home country, France.

  • Dictionnaire japonais-français des noms principaux de l'histoire et de la géographie de Japon, published in 1899. This was his major French dictionary.

  • Nihon seiei (which means Japanese hymns), published in 1922. He wrote this book with J. Lemaréchal.
