Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Most Rev. Edmund Stonor (born April 13, 1831 – died February 28, 1912) was an important British Roman Catholic archbishop. He was known for his work and dedication within the Church.

Edmund Stonor was born on April 2, 1831, at Stonor, his family's old home in England. His family, the Stonors, were known as recusants. This meant they were Roman Catholics who refused to attend Church of England services. His parents were Thomas Stonor, 3rd Lord Camoys, and Frances (who was born Towneley). Edmund Stonor served as a Canon of St John Lateran in Rome. Later, he became the Archbishop of Trapezus.

Becoming an Archbishop

Edmund Stonor became a priest on April 13, 1856, when he was 25 years old. Many years later, on February 11, 1889, at age 57, he was given the title of Archbishop of Trapezus. This was a special title for an archbishop who did not oversee a specific area. He was officially ordained as an archbishop later that same month.

His ordination ceremony was a big event. Many important people attended, including Lord William Beauchamp Nevill and his wife. Many other English visitors and people living in Rome also came to witness the event. Archbishop Stonor also helped to ordain William Henry O'Connell. O'Connell later became a very important Cardinal Archbishop of Boston in the United States.

Serving the Papal Zouaves

Archbishop Stonor was also a dedicated chief chaplain for the English-speaking Papal Zouaves. The Papal Zouaves were a group of soldiers who protected the Pope and the Papal States. He was known for his energy and devotion to these soldiers. His work with them was even mentioned in a book called Two Years in the Pontifical Zouaves.

His Later Life and Death

Archbishop Stonor lived a long life dedicated to his faith. He passed away on February 28, 1912, at the age of 80.
