Eduard Marxsen (23 July 1806 – 18 November 1887) was a German musician. He was a talented pianist, a composer, and a very important music teacher. He lived during the 1800s.

A Life in Music

Eduard Marxsen was born in a place called Nienstädten. He learned music from some very famous teachers. These teachers had connections to great composers like Mozart and Beethoven. For example, one of his teachers, Ignaz von Seyfried, even worked with Beethoven! Marxsen also learned from Simon Sechter, Johann Heinrich Clasing, and Carl Maria von Bocklet. Bocklet was a close friend of Schubert.

His Most Famous Student

Marxsen is perhaps best known for teaching Johannes Brahms. Brahms became one of the most famous composers of all time! Brahms thought so highly of Marxsen that he dedicated his amazing Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major to him. This shows how much Brahms respected his old teacher. His Own Music

Eduard Marxsen wrote about 70 pieces of music. One of his well-known works was an orchestral piece called Beethovens Schatten. This means "Beethoven's Shadow" in German. It was played many times, showing his skill as a composer.
