Early Cooking Days
While still in college, Eduardo got an amazing job offer. He was asked to be the chef on a large yacht named Dorothea. He took the job. After graduating, he worked on the yacht for two and a half years. For the next ten years, he cooked on different private yachts. This job let him travel all over the world. He learned about many different types of food from various cultures.
In 2010, Eduardo returned to Montana. He then started his own food company called Montana Mex. It sells flavored salts, salsas, and hot sauces. He also began working on a cooking show called Active Ingredient. Eduardo says his food is fun and simple. He likes to explore new flavors. His cooking is always inspired by the local environment.
A Life-Changing Accident
On October 9, 2011, Eduardo was hunting elk in Montana. He found the remains of a bear. He tried to remove a claw with his knife. Suddenly, he received a strong electric shock. A hidden power line was under the bear's remains. He was knocked down and badly burned.
Eduardo remembers telling himself to get up. His memory after that is not complete. The next thing he remembers is walking on a road. He was about a mile from where the accident happened. By the time he found help, he had walked three miles.
He later said, "I was scared, but I was set on learning how to survive." During his recovery, doctors found he had a serious health issue. This meant he had to pause his surgeries. He needed three months of special treatment. He focused on getting through this challenge. He knew he needed to recover to get back to cooking and his life.
Cooking After the Accident
Eduardo's left arm was fitted with a simple prosthetic hook. Even though he is right-handed, some tasks were harder. But he kept working as a chef. He slowly re-learned basic cooking skills. These included chopping and dicing food.
In 2013, Eduardo received a new bionic hand. It was designed by Touch Bionics. This hand is controlled by his forearm muscles. It can grip in 25 different ways. This allowed him to do tasks that needed a lot of hand movement. The accident also made him more humble. He became more willing to rely on his team in the kitchen.
Eduardo also continued working on his Active Ingredient cooking show. In the show, he shares his life experiences. He also shares his love for the outdoors. He promotes healthy food and an active lifestyle. He encourages everyone to have a "can-do attitude." He believes in giving "it all you’ve got and having fun doing it."
In 2014, Eduardo decided his five-fingered bionic hand was not perfect for cooking. It was not waterproof and sometimes got cut. He switched back to a bionic hook. He explained that cooking is like a dance. He felt more natural and smooth with the hook. You can find his Montana Mex spices and seasonings online and in stores.
