Early Life and New Skills
Edward Anthony was born in New York City. He graduated from Columbia College in 1838. He was a very good student. After college, he started working as a civil engineer.
One of his first jobs was helping to build the original Croton Aqueduct. This was a system that brought clean drinking water to New York City. It carried water from country streams and ponds.
Photography and Diplomacy
Before the aqueduct was finished, Edward got a special assignment. He joined Professor James Renwick to survey the border of Maine. This was during a disagreement with Great Britain about the exact border line.
At the time, Edward was already experimenting with a new art. It was called photography, and it used sunlight to make pictures. During the survey, he took photos of the hills along the border. These photos helped prove that the hills existed, which England had denied. This was the first time photography was used to help solve a disagreement between countries. These important photos are still kept in Washington, D.C.
A Business Grows
After the survey, Edward Anthony became a full-time photographer. He was very successful. Soon, he decided to start a business selling photography supplies. His own experience as a photographer helped him a lot. His company quickly became a leader in New York.
In 1852, his brother, Henry T. Anthony, joined the business. The company then became known as E. & H. T. Anthony & Company. In 1877, the company changed its structure. Edward became the president, and his brother was the vice-president.
Edward Anthony married Margaretta R. Montgomery in 1848. They had a son, Richard A. Anthony, and two daughters. Richard later joined the family business.
Edward Anthony passed away on December 14, 1888, from heart failure. He left behind a legacy as a photography pioneer and a successful businessman.
