Early Life and Education
Edward Atslowe received a good education. He studied at Winchester College, a famous school, and then went on to New College, Oxford. At Oxford, he became a 'doctor of physic' on August 27, 1566.
In September of that same year, Queen Elizabeth I visited Oxford University. Edward Atslowe was one of four doctors chosen to speak before the Queen during her visit.
Medical Career in London
Soon after his time at Oxford, Atslowe moved to London. He joined the Royal College of Physicians, which is a very important group for doctors. Between 1569 and 1583, he held many important positions within this college.
Dr. Atslowe was a highly respected physician. Many of the most important noblemen of his time were his patients. He also likely worked as a doctor for the household of the Earl of Sussex for several years.
Involvement with Mary, Queen of Scots
Besides his medical work, Edward Atslowe also had strong feelings about politics and religion. He supported the Catholic faith and was a strong supporter of Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary was a cousin of Queen Elizabeth I and was held captive in England.
In December 1570, Atslowe visited Mary at Tutbury. For many years, he was believed to have helped noblemen like the Earl of Arundel and the Earl of Northumberland. They were trying to get help for Mary from other countries.
Later Life and Death
Because of his support for Mary, Queen of Scots, Edward Atslowe faced difficulties. In 1579, he was arrested but later set free. He was arrested again in 1585 and taken to the Tower of London. He denied any wrongdoing when questioned by important officials.
Atslowe was released not long after this. In 1587, he cared for a son of the Earl of Northumberland who was very ill. Edward Atslowe passed away around May 2, 1594.
In 1573, Edward Atslowe married Frances Wingfield. After his death, the Earl of Arundel made sure that Frances received money each year.
