Edward Burden (born around 1540, died 1588) was a Catholic priest in the 1500s. During this time in England, it was against the law to be a Catholic priest. He is remembered as one of the Eighty-five martyrs of England and Wales, who were people who died for their Catholic faith.
Edward Burden's Life
Edward Burden was born in County Durham, England. He went to Corpus Christi College, Oxford, which is a famous university. Later, he studied at a special college in Douai (now in France) called Duoay College. In 1584, he officially became a priest in a city called Rheims.
In 1586, Edward Burden came back to England. Because being a Catholic priest was illegal, he was captured two years later. On November 29, 1588, he was executed in a very brutal way in York because of his beliefs.
Many years later, on November 22, 1987, Pope John Paul II declared him "Blessed." This means he was recognized by the Catholic Church as a holy person who lived a life of great faith.
