The Edward C. Peters House, also known as Ivy Hall, is a beautiful old house in Atlanta, Georgia. It was built in the Queen Anne style, which means it has lots of fancy details and towers. You can find it in Midtown Atlanta, right near Piedmont Avenue and Ponce de Leon Avenue. Today, the Savannah College of Art and Design owns this historic building.
The Story of Ivy Hall
The Edward C. Peters House was built in 1883. It was designed for Edward C. Peters by Gottfried I. Norrman, an architect from Sweden. The house has special touches that show the Peters family's history. For example, some tiles show a group called the Philadelphia Fish and Chowder Society. Edward's great-grandfather helped start this group.
Edward's father, Richard Peters, was very important in changing a small town into the big city of Atlanta. Edward took over his father's railroad and trolley businesses in 1889.
Ivy Hall was lucky to survive the Great Atlanta Fire of 1917. During this huge fire, some houses were blown up to create a gap. This gap stopped the fire from spreading further. After Edward's daughter-in-law passed away in 1970, the house was almost torn down. But three years later, it became a popular restaurant called The Mansion.
Most of the inside of the house has stayed the same over the years. However, a fire in 2000 caused the restaurant to close. In 2005, the Savannah College of Art and Design bought the house. They worked hard to restore Ivy Hall, making it look new again. It officially reopened on October 3, 2008. Some new homes were also built on parts of the land around the house.
