Edward Carteret (1671–1739) was an English politician. He was in charge of the Post Office as Postmaster General from 1721 until he passed away.
About Edward Carteret
Edward Carteret was the third son of Philip Carteret and the younger brother of George Carteret. He went to school at Brentwood School and later studied at Trinity College, Cambridge.
His Work in Parliament
Edward Carteret became a Member of Parliament (MP) several times. An MP is a person elected to represent people in the country's main law-making body, like a government representative.
He was first elected as an MP for Huntingdon in 1698. Later, in 1702, he became an MP for Bedford.
In 1717, he was elected again as an MP for Bere Alston. He stopped being an MP in 1720 when he got a new important job.
Leading the Post Office
In 1721, Edward Carteret was chosen to be the Postmaster General. This was a very important role, as he was in charge of the entire postal system in the country. This meant making sure letters and packages were delivered all over the United Kingdom.
He worked as a Joint Postmaster General (meaning he shared the job with someone else) from 1721 to 1732. For a short time, from 1732 to 1733, he was the only Postmaster General. After that, he went back to being a Joint Postmaster General until he died.
His Family Life
Edward Carteret passed away suddenly on April 15, 1739. He was 68 years old.
In 1699, he married Bridget Exton. Her father, Sir Thomas Exton, was also an important person who worked in law. Edward and Bridget had three sons and three daughters.
