Edward Chandler was born in Dublin, Ireland, around 1668. He went to Trinity College, Dublin, where he earned his first degree in 1686. Later, he also studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge in England.

After his studies, Chandler became a priest in 1693. He worked as a chaplain for William Lloyd, who was a bishop. Over the years, Edward Chandler held several important church positions. In 1697, he became a prebendary (a type of church official) in Lichfield. He earned his Doctor of Divinity degree in 1701.

In 1717, he was chosen to be the Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry. He was officially made a bishop on November 17, 1717, at Lichfield Cathedral.

Later, in 1730, Bishop Chandler moved to an even more important role. He became the Bishop of Durham on November 21, 1730. This position also made him the Lord Lieutenant of Durham, a royal representative, from 1730 until his death in 1750.

Bishop Chandler was known for his scholarly work. He wrote a book called A Defence of Christianity from the Prophecies in 1725. This book aimed to defend Christian beliefs against arguments made by another writer, Anthony Collins. Chandler published another book in 1728 to further explain his views. He also published several sermons and other writings.

He passed away in London on July 20, 1750, after a long illness. He was buried in Farnham Royal.

Edward Chandler was known for his generosity. He gave money to help the church and its community. For example, he donated £50 to the church in Monkwearmouth and £200 to help build a house for the minister in Stockton. He also gave £2,000 to help the widows of priests in his diocese.
