The Edward Cogswell House, also known as the Bliss House, is a very old and important home in Griswold, Connecticut. You can find it at 1429 Hopeville Road. The oldest part of this house was built around 1740. This makes it one of the few buildings from the 1700s still standing in Griswold! Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 15, 1993.

What Does the Edward Cogswell House Look Like?
The Edward Cogswell House is in a quiet, rural part of eastern Griswold. It sits on the west side of Hopeville Road. The house is about 0.5 miles (0.8 km) north of Connecticut Route 138.
Main Features of This Historic Home
This house is a two-and-a-half-story building. It is made of wood and has five sections across its front. A large chimney sits right in the middle of the house. The outside is covered with traditional clapboard siding. The house also has a strong stone foundation.
The Oldest Part of the House
A one-and-a-half-story section extends from the back of the house. This part is called an "ell." It is probably the oldest section of the entire building. It was common for houses from this time to grow over the years.
Inside the Edward Cogswell House
The inside of the house has a classic layout. It features a central chimney plan. When you enter, there's a small hallway. From here, a narrow, winding staircase leads up to the second floor.
Rooms and Original Details
On either side of the big chimney, you'll find parlors. These were like living rooms where people would relax. The kitchen stretches across the back of the house. There are also small rooms in the back corners. Many original wood details are still inside. You can also see wide chestnut floorboards.
Who Lived in the Edward Cogswell House?
The oldest part of the house, the ell, was built around 1740. It was built by Edward Cogswell. He was one of the first people to settle in the Griswold area. He arrived there in 1714.
Edward Cogswell's Important Role
Edward Cogswell was a very important person in the early days of Griswold. He played a big part in helping Griswold become its own town. Before that, it was part of Preston. He also invested in one of the first ironworks in the area.
A Family Home for Generations
Edward's son, John Cogswell, later took over ownership of the property. John served as a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. The Edward Cogswell House and its surrounding farmlands stayed in the Cogswell family. They owned it for many years, until 1862.
