Edward Crofton, 2nd Baron Crofton facts for kids
Edward Crofton, 2nd Baron Crofton (born August 1, 1806 – died December 17, 1869) was an important Anglo-Irish politician. He was known as Sir Edward Crofton, 4th Baronet for a short time between 1816 and 1817. He belonged to the Conservative Party, which is a political group that often believes in traditional values and less government involvement.
Who Was Edward Crofton?
Edward Crofton came from a well-known family in Ireland with strong ties to Britain, which is what "Anglo-Irish" means. He held two important titles during his life: Baronet and Baron. A Baronet is a hereditary title, like a knight, that passes down in the family. A Baron is a higher noble title, which also passes down through generations.
His Family and Titles
Edward Crofton was the son of Sir Edward Crofton, 3rd Baronet. His grandmother was Anne Crofton, who was the 1st Baroness Crofton. This means she was the first woman in her family to hold the title of Baroness.
His mother was Lady Charlotte. She was the daughter of a nobleman named John Stewart, who was the 7th Earl of Galloway. Edward Crofton became a Baronet in 1816 after his father passed away. The very next year, in 1817, he inherited the title of Baron Crofton when his grandmother died.
His Role in Politics
In 1840, Lord Crofton was chosen to be an Irish Representative Peer. This meant he was one of a few Irish noblemen who were elected to represent Ireland in the House of Lords in the British Parliament. This was a very important role.
He also served in the government as a Lord-in-waiting. This job meant he was a government whip in the House of Lords. A "whip" helps make sure that members of their political party vote in a certain way and attend important meetings. He held this position several times:
- In 1852
- From 1858 to 1859
- From 1866 to 1868
He worked with important leaders from the Conservative Party, like the Earl of Derby and Benjamin Disraeli.
Personal Life
Lord Crofton married Lady Georgina in 1833. She was the daughter of Henry Paget, who was the 1st Marquess of Anglesey.
Edward Crofton passed away in December 1869 when he was 63 years old. His oldest son, also named Edward, inherited his titles and became the 3rd Baron Crofton. Lady Georgina, his wife, died a few years later in 1875.
