Edward George Dannreuther (born November 4, 1844, died February 12, 1905) was a talented German pianist and writer about music. He moved to England in 1863 and lived there for the rest of his life. Edward's father wanted him to work in banking, but Edward really loved music. So, in 1859, he left home and went to Leipzig, Germany, to study music.

Early Life and Musical Training

Edward Dannreuther studied music at the Leipzig Conservatoire. There, he was a student of the famous pianist Ignaz Moscheles. Edward was a big fan of the composer Richard Wagner from a young age. He even helped start the London Wagner Society in 1872. This group helped share Wagner's music with more people in England.

Performing in England

In 1863, Edward was invited to play the piano at concerts in London. These concerts were held at the Crystal Palace, a very famous building at the time. People really enjoyed his performances of music by composers like Chopin and Beethoven. After he got married in 1871, Edward decided to stay in England for good.

Contributions to Music

Edward Dannreuther wrote an important two-volume book called Musical Ornamentation. For many years, this book was a key guide for musicians. It helped them understand how to play older music correctly, especially the decorative notes and flourishes. This book had a big impact on how musicians learned to perform.

Teaching and Influence

In 1895, Edward became a piano professor at the Royal College of Music. He held this important job until he passed away. He was always excited about new music and helped many young composers. One of his most famous students was Hubert Parry, who became a very important composer himself.

A special plaque was put on Edward Dannreuther's old home in London on July 26, 2005. It's at 12 Orme Square, Westminster, and remembers his contributions to music.

Family Life

Edward Dannreuther had two sons who both served in the Royal Navy. His son, Hubert Edward Dannreuther (1880–1977), became a British admiral. He was one of only six people who survived when the ship HMS Invincible sank. Another son, Tristan Dannreuther (1872–1963), was also an officer in the Royal Navy. After World War I, he worked as an Assistant Director of Naval Intelligence.
