Edward Sholto Douglas-Pennant, also known as the 3rd Baron Penrhyn, was an important British politician. He was born on June 10, 1864, and passed away on August 22, 1927, at the age of 63. He was a member of the Conservative Party, which is one of the main political groups in the United Kingdom.

Edward came from the well-known Douglas family, led by the Earl of Morton. His father was George Douglas-Pennant, 2nd Baron Penrhyn, who was also a Baron. His mother was Pamela Blanche.

Early Life and Family

Edward Sholto Douglas-Pennant was born into a family that had a long history in British society and politics. His father, George Douglas-Pennant, held the title of the 2nd Baron Penrhyn. This meant he was part of the nobility. Edward's mother was Pamela Blanche. She was the daughter of Sir Charles Rushout, 2nd Baronet.

Political Career

Edward Douglas-Pennant became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1895. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the British Parliament. He represented the area called Northamptonshire South. He won this election as a member of the Conservative Party. He held this important position until the year 1900. After that, his brother-in-law, Edward FitzRoy, took over his seat in Parliament.

Military Service

Besides his political work, Edward Douglas-Pennant also had a military career. He served in several different parts of the British Army.

Life Guards

He started his military service in a famous regiment called the 1st Life Guards. Here, he held the rank of lieutenant. Later, he became a major in the Reserve Regiment of the Life Guards.

Yeomanry and Honorary Colonel

After that, he joined the Buckinghamshire (Royal Bucks Hussars) Imperial Yeomanry. In this unit, he also served as a major. He later rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. On July 1, 1907, he was given a special title. He became an Honorary Colonel. This was for the 4th (Royal Carnarvon and Merioneth Militia) Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. This was a special honor because both his father and his grandfather had held the same position before him.

Family Life

Lord Penrhyn married the Hon. Blanche Georgiana in 1887. She was the daughter of Charles FitzRoy, 3rd Baron Southampton. They had several children together. Their oldest son was named Alan George Sholto Douglas-Pennant. Sadly, Alan passed away during the First World War. This was a very difficult time for the family. Edward Sholto Douglas-Pennant passed away in August 1927. He was 63 years old. After his death, his second son, Hugh, became the 4th Baron Penrhyn. Hugh was his only surviving son. Lady Penrhyn, Edward's wife, passed away later in November 1944.
