Hugh Napier Douglas-Pennant, 4th Baron Penrhyn (born August 6, 1894 – died June 26, 1949) was an important British nobleman and army officer. He inherited a special title called a "barony" and served his country in the military.

Early Life and Education

Hugh was the second of two sons born to Edward Douglas-Pennant, 3rd Baron Penrhyn. His mother was Blanche Georgiana FitzRoy. His grandfather was Charles FitzRoy, 3rd Baron Southampton.

Hugh went to Eton College, a famous school in England. After that, he studied at the Royal Military College Sandhurst. This is where people learn to become army officers.

Military Service

Hugh fought in the First World War. He was a soldier in a group called the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys). This was a cavalry regiment, meaning they fought on horseback.

During the war, his older brother, Alan, was sadly killed in 1914. This happened on the Western Front, a major battle area. Because his brother died, Hugh became the next in line to inherit the family title.

Becoming a Baron

In 1927, Hugh's father passed away. Hugh then officially became the 4th Baron Penrhyn. A baron is a noble title, often passed down through families.

Public Service and Honors

After the war, Hugh took on many important roles. He was the president of the Conservative Association in Carnarvon. This was a local political group.

He also served as a Justice of the Peace. This meant he helped with local legal matters. He was a Deputy Lord Lieutenant and later the Lord Lieutenant for Caernarvonshire. These roles involved representing the King or Queen in the county.

Hugh was also made a knight of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. This is an honor given for good service. From 1932 to 1946, he was an Honorary Colonel in the 6th Battalion Royal Fusiliers.

Family Life and Legacy

On April 25, 1922, Hugh married Sybil Mary Hardinge. She was the daughter of Henry Hardinge, 3rd Viscount Hardinge. Hugh and Sybil divorced in 1941 and did not have any children.

Hugh Napier Douglas-Pennant died in 1949. Since he had no children, the barony passed to his cousin, Frank Douglas-Pennant. Frank was the grandson of the 1st Baron Penrhyn.
