Edward Alfred Goulding, 1st Baron Wargrave (born November 5, 1862 – died July 17, 1936) was an important British politician and businessman. He was known as Sir Edward Goulding for a few years before he became a Baron. He worked as a lawyer and was a member of the Conservative Party. He served in the House of Commons, which is a part of the UK Parliament, from 1895 to 1922. After that, he became a Baron and joined the House of Lords, another part of Parliament.

Who Was Edward Goulding?

Edward Goulding was born in Ireland. His father was William Goulding, and his older brother was Sir William Goulding, 1st Baronet. Edward went to school at Clifton College and then studied at St John's College, Cambridge. After his studies, he became a lawyer in 1887.

Edward Goulding's Political Journey

Edward Goulding started his political career by becoming a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1895. He represented the area called Devizes in Wiltshire.

Serving as an MP for Devizes

He was re-elected as the MP for Devizes in 1900. He held this position until the 1906 election. After that, he tried to become an MP for a different area, Finsbury Central, but he wasn't successful that time.

Returning to Parliament for Worcester

Two years later, in 1908, Edward Goulding returned to Parliament. He was elected as the MP for the city of Worcester. This seat had been empty for two years because a special investigation found that there had been a lot of unfair practices during the 1906 election in Worcester.

He was re-elected for Worcester in both the January and December elections of 1910. He was also re-elected in 1918 as a "Coalition Unionist," which meant he was part of a group of politicians working together.

Becoming a Baron and Leaving the Commons

In 1915, Edward Goulding was given the title of Baronet. This meant he became "Sir Edward Goulding." In 1918, he was also made a member of the Privy Council, a group of important advisors to the King.

He decided not to run for Parliament in the 1922 election. Instead, he was given an even higher title: Baron Wargrave. This meant he became a Lord and joined the House of Lords.

Beyond Politics: Business and Life

Besides his work in politics, Edward Goulding was also a successful businessman. He was the chairman of Rolls-Royce Limited, a very famous car company. He also led London Associated Electricity Undertakings Limited from 1935 to 1936.

Lord Wargrave lived in two large homes: Wargrave Hall in Berkshire and Shiplake Court in Oxfordshire. He passed away in July 1936 when he was 73 years old. He did not have any children, so his titles of Baronet and Baron ended with him.
