Early Life and Political Start
Edward Howard was the youngest son of Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk. He was honored as a Knight of the Order of the Bath. This was a special award given by the King.
In 1624, Edward Howard became a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the country's government. He was chosen to represent two areas, Calne and Wallingford, but he chose to sit for Calne.
Later, in 1628, he was elected MP for Hertford. However, on April 12, 1628, he was given the title of Baron Howard of Escrick. A Baron is a noble title, which meant he became a member of the House of Lords.
Role in the English Civil War
Edward Howard was one of twelve noblemen who signed a special document called the "petition on grievances" in 1640. This document listed complaints against King Charles I. He presented this petition to the King.
He was very active in the early years of the English Civil War. This was a big conflict between the King and Parliament. Edward Howard was one of ten Lords chosen to attend the Westminster Assembly of Divines. This was a group of important people who discussed religious matters and helped guide the country. He also helped with talks involving Scottish officials.
Later Political Life
In 1649, the House of Lords, where Barons usually sat, was temporarily removed. Because of this, Edward Howard became a member of the House of Commons, representing Carlisle. He also served on the Council of State, which was like a governing committee for England.
In 1651, he faced serious issues regarding his conduct. As a result, he was removed from his position in Parliament.
Family Life
Edward Howard married Mary Butler on November 30, 1623. Mary was the daughter of John Boteler and Elizabeth Villiers. Their wedding took place at York House.
They had two sons:
- Thomas, who became the 2nd Baron Howard of Escrick. He married Elizabeth Mordaunt.
- William Howard, 3rd Baron Howard of Escrick, who later became the 3rd Baron.
