Sir Edward Hungerford was an important soldier and a courtier (someone who worked closely with the king) during the time of King Henry VIII of England. He was known for being present at a very famous meeting called the Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1520.

A Life of Service

Edward was the son of Sir Walter Hungerford of Farleigh and his wife, Jane. He joined his father in Scotland in 1503.

Later, in 1513, he served in the English army in France. During this time, he was made a knight at the siege of Tournai. This was a big honor!

Sir Edward also held important jobs in England. He was the Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1517. A sheriff was like a main law enforcement officer for a county. The next year, in 1518, he became the Sheriff of Somerset and Dorset.

In 1520, he joined King Henry VIII at the grand event known as the Field of the Cloth of Gold. This was a huge meeting between the kings of England and France. Sir Edward Hungerford passed away on January 24, 1522.

His Family

Sir Edward Hungerford was married two times. His first wife was Jane de la Zouche. She was chosen to attend Catherine of Aragon, who was King Henry VIII's first queen, in 1501.

Edward and Jane had one son named Walter. Walter was born in 1503 and later became the 1st Baron Hungerford of Heytesbury in 1536.

Sir Edward's second wife was Agnes Cotell.
