Agnes, Lady Hungerford (died 20 February 1523) was an English noblewoman. She was the second wife of Sir Edward Hungerford. After her second husband passed away in 1522, Agnes was investigated for her involvement in the death of her first husband, John Cotell. She was found guilty and faced serious consequences in 1523.

About Agnes Hungerford

Agnes was known as Lady Hungerford because she was married to a knight, Sir Edward Hungerford. She lived in England during the late 1400s and early 1500s. Her story is remembered because of the legal issues she faced later in her life.

Early Life and First Marriage

Before marrying Sir Edward Hungerford, Agnes was the widow of a man named John Cotell. John Cotell worked as a steward for Sir Edward Hungerford. In 1518, Agnes was involved in the death of her first husband, John Cotell, at Farleigh Castle. She was said to have had help from two men, William Mathewe and William Inges.

Second Marriage and Legal Troubles

After John Cotell's death, Agnes married Sir Edward Hungerford. He was a knight, which meant she became Lady Hungerford. Sir Edward passed away on January 24, 1522. Agnes was in charge of his will and estate.

Around the time of Sir Edward's death, Agnes and the other people involved in John Cotell's death were investigated. They were brought to court for their actions.

Consequences and Legacy

Agnes and William Mathewe were found guilty of their involvement in John Cotell's death. They faced severe punishment at Tyburn on February 20, 1523. Agnes is believed to be buried in the Grey Friars' Church in London.

Because of these events, Agnes became quite well-known for her actions. Her family later chose not to include her in their family records, like genealogies, due to the public attention and negative reputation she gained.
