Edward Isaac: A Protestant in Tough Times
Edward Isaac lived during a period when England was going through big changes in religion. He was a Protestant, which means he followed a branch of Christianity that was different from the official church at the time, especially under Queen Mary I. Because of his beliefs, he became a Marian exile, someone who had to leave England to escape danger during the reign of Queen Mary I.
Helping Others Escape
Edward Isaac played a brave role in helping other Protestants stay safe. He helped a very important person named Edwin Sandys leave England. Edward even sent his own son to go with Edwin Sandys all the way to Antwerp, a city in what is now Belgium. This shows how much he cared about helping others who were in danger because of their faith.
Queen Mary I was trying to bring back the old religion to England. She ordered the arrest of many exiles for going against the government, and Edward Isaac was on that list.
Life in Exile
To stay safe, Edward Isaac himself had to leave England. He traveled to Strasburg, a city that was then part of the Holy Roman Empire (now in France). Many other English Protestants also found safety there. While in Strasburg, Edward Isaac was part of a group that had different ideas from John Knox, another famous Protestant leader. Even among people who shared the same main beliefs, there were sometimes different opinions on how things should be done.
