Edward Jennings was a very brave Irish soldier. He was born around 1820. He earned the Victoria Cross (VC). This is the highest award for bravery. A Hero's Bravery
Edward Jennings was about 37 years old. He was a "Rough-Rider" in the Bengal Artillery. This was part of the Bengal Army in India. He showed incredible courage during a big event. This event was called the Indian Mutiny. It was a large rebellion in India.
The Relief of Lucknow
Edward Jennings earned his Victoria Cross during the Relief of Lucknow. This was a very important battle. It happened between November 14 and 22, 1857. Soldiers and officers chose him for his bravery. They saw his outstanding courage during this difficult time.
Edward Jennings' Later Life
After his military service, Edward Jennings worked for the local council. He was a road sweeper for many years. It seems he faced tough times later in life. Because of this, he sold his Victoria Cross. A private collector bought it from him.

A Memorial for a Hero
Edward Jennings VC died on May 10, 1889. He was buried in an unmarked grave. This was a pauper's grave in Preston Cemetery. This cemetery is in North Shields, England. Many people were buried there without headstones.
In 1997, people started an appeal. They wanted to raise money for a headstone. They needed about £2000. This money would place a proper memorial on his grave. On September 10, 1997, a special service took place. It was held at his graveside. This service was to dedicate his new headstone. It finally honored his bravery.
