Edward John Rudge (born May 30, 1792 – died January 29, 1861) was a British lawyer and someone who studied old things, known as an antiquary. He spent his life learning about history and the law.

Who Was Edward John Rudge?

Edward John Rudge was a very educated man from Britain. He followed in his parents' footsteps, who were also interested in learning. He became a successful lawyer, helping people with legal matters. He also loved history and old objects, which is what an antiquary does.

Early Life and Education

Edward John Rudge was the son of Edward Rudge, who studied plants (a botanist) and old things (an antiquary). His mother, Anne Rudge, was an artist who drew plants. He grew up in a family that valued learning and history.

He went to school in Chiswick and then to Westminster School. After that, he studied at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), in 1815. Later, he earned a Master of Arts (M.A.) in 1818.

His Career as a Barrister

A barrister is a type of lawyer who represents people in court. Edward John Rudge started his legal training at Lincoln's Inn in 1815. This is one of the special places in London where lawyers are trained. By 1819, he was officially "called to the bar," which means he was allowed to practice law as a barrister.

Exploring the Past: An Antiquary's Work

Besides being a lawyer, Edward John Rudge was also an antiquary. An antiquary is someone who studies and collects old objects and historical records. They are like history detectives, trying to understand the past.

He became a member of important groups that shared his interests. In 1834, he joined the Society of Antiquaries of London. This group focuses on preserving and studying historical items. In 1847, he was also chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society, which is a very old and respected group for scientists and thinkers.

Edward John Rudge also wrote books about history. He wrote Some Account of the History and Antiquities of Evesham in 1820, which was about the town of Evesham. He also wrote Illustrated and Historical Account of Buckden Palace in 1839, sharing details about that historic building.
