Edward Lucas (born September 27, 1787 – died November 12, 1871) was an important person in County Monaghan, Ireland. He owned land and was a politician. He helped make decisions for his county in the government.

Who Was Edward Lucas?

Edward Lucas was the only child of Charles Lucas. His father was the High Sheriff of Monaghan in 1795. A High Sheriff was like a main law enforcement officer for a county. Edward's grandfather, also named Edward Lucas, was a Member of Parliament (MP).

When Edward was young, in 1796, he took over his family's large estate called Castle Shane. This meant he became a very important landowner in the area.

Edward Lucas's Political Career

Edward Lucas became the High Sheriff for Monaghan in 1818. Later, he became a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented County Monaghan in the British Parliament. He served as an MP from 1834 to 1841.

After being an MP, Edward Lucas took on another big role. From 1841 to 1846, he was the Under-Secretary for Ireland. This was a very important job in the government. He helped manage affairs in Ireland. In 1845, he also joined the Irish Privy Council. This council was a group of important advisors to the King or Queen for Irish matters.

His Family Life

In 1812, Edward Lucas married Anne Ruxton. She was the daughter of William Ruxton. Edward and Anne had a large family. They had five sons and three daughters. One of their sons was named Gould Arthur Lucas.

When Edward Lucas passed away, his oldest son, Edward William, took over the family estate at Castle Shane. Edward's wife, Anne, lived until August 15, 1880.
