During the Civil War, Edward M. Lee joined the Union Army. He served under a famous general named George Armstrong Custer. Lee quickly showed his leadership skills. He rose through the ranks to become a Lieutenant Colonel. He was part of the 5th Michigan Cavalry. This group was also known as the "Wolverines" and was part of Custer's Michigan Brigade. They fought in many important battles.

A Champion for Women's Votes

After the war, Edward M. Lee moved to Wyoming. He became the Governor of the Wyoming Territory. This was a very important job. On January 1, 1913, he passed away. An obituary, which is a notice about someone's death, mentioned his great achievement. It said he signed the first bill that gave women the right to vote. This was a huge step forward for women's rights in America. It meant women in Wyoming could participate in elections, just like men.
