  • Stuttgart (1814): Edward Michael Ward began his diplomatic career in 1814 as a secretary of legation in Stuttgart, a city in Germany. A secretary of legation helps the main diplomat with their duties.
  • Lisbon (1816-1823): In 1816, he moved to Lisbon, Portugal. By 1820, he became the Chargé d'Affaires to the Court of Portugal. This meant he was in charge of the British diplomatic mission there. He held this important role until 1823.

  • St Petersburg (1824-1825): After Portugal, Ward went to St Petersburg, Russia, in 1824. He served as a secretary of embassy. He was then named Minister Plenipotentiary to the Emperor of Russia for a time. This is a very high-ranking diplomat who has full power to act on behalf of their country.
  • Vienna (1825-1826): He then spent a year in Vienna, Austria.
  • Saxony (1828-1832): In 1828, he became the Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Court of Saxony, another German state. He stayed in this role until 1832, when he returned to England.

Family Life and Passing

In 1815, Edward Michael Ward married Lady Matilda Stewart. They had a daughter and a son together. He passed away in Brighton, England, in 1832 at the age of 43.
