Edward Vischer began his career working for a trading company called Heinrich Virmond. This job took him on many journeys along the Pacific Coast of the Americas. In 1835, he visited Peru for business. While there, he lived with another artist named Mauritius Rugendas. He also met the famous scientist Charles Darwin.
In 1842, Vischer became very interested in California. He agreed to travel there for Virmond's company. This trip helped him discover his passion for drawing the natural beauty of the region.
Capturing California's Beauty
Vischer is best known for his incredible pencil sketches of California landscapes. He drew these detailed scenes throughout the 1860s and 1870s. He sketched many different things. His favorite subjects included the historic California missions, tall trees, majestic mountains, and peaceful rural scenes.
In 1870, he published a book called Pictorial of California. This book brought together nearly 200 of his drawings. It was the first time anyone had created such a complete collection of California's scenery. He followed this in 1872 with another album of drawings. This one focused on the California missions. A final book of mission drawings was published in 1878, the year he passed away.
