Edward Willis Way facts for kids
Dr. Edward Willis Way (born around 1847 – died 28 September 1901) was a very important doctor and surgeon. He worked in the early days of the colony of South Australia. A colony is a new settlement far from the country that rules it.
Growing Up and Learning
Edward Way was the son of Reverend James Way. His brother was Sir Samuel Way, who became a famous judge. Edward moved to Adelaide with his family when he was a young child in 1850. He sailed on a ship called the Anna Maria.
He went to school at the AEI and St. Peter's College. After that, he studied medicine. He went to Guy's Hospital and the University of Edinburgh to become a doctor.
His Medical Work
After finishing his studies, Dr. Way came back to Adelaide. He quickly became a very busy doctor. He cared for patients at the Stockade, which later became Yatala Labour Prison. He also worked for the Adelaide City Council as a Health Officer. This meant he helped keep the city healthy.
Dr. Way opened his own private hospital in North Adelaide. He also taught at the University of Adelaide. He taught about obstetrics (caring for pregnant women and childbirth) and gynaecology (women's health).
He also worked at the Private Hospital, Wakefield Street. He was a special doctor for women's health at the Adelaide Hospital. From 1892 to 1893, he was the President of the South Australian group of the British Medical Association. This was a big honor for doctors.
His Family Life
Dr. Edward Way was the brother of Sir Samuel Way. He was also good friends with his brother-in-law, Dr. Allan Campbell.
Edward and his wife (born around 1850 – died 20 October 1906) had homes in Adelaide. They had several children:
- Inman Way became a doctor at Kalgoorlie Hospital.
- His oldest daughter, Florence Jane Elizabeth "Bessie" Way, married Arthur Vernon Harvey. He was a mining investor. Later, she married Captain C. Stanley Tratman. Bessie was the first matron (head nurse) of Kalgoorlie Hospital. She later worked at Ru Rua Hospital in North Adelaide.
- His second daughter, Kate Isabel, married William Arthur Irwin.
- His third daughter, Grace Mary "Gracie" Way, married Henry Offley Irwin.
- His youngest daughter, Marian, married Dr. Arthur Waldo Connelly.
His Passing
Dr. Edward Way died suddenly on 28 September 1901. He passed away while he was performing surgery at his private hospital. He was buried at the North Road Cemetery.
