Edward Mervyn Patterson (born March 14, 1920, died April 11, 1997) was an important scientist from Northern Ireland. He was a talented chemist and geologist. He even led the Geological Society of Glasgow for a few years.

Growing Up and School

Edward Mervyn Patterson was born in Northern Ireland on March 14, 1920. His father, John Wilson Patterson, worked for the government. His mother was Dorothy Mary Ekin.

He went to school at Bangor Grammar School. After that, he studied chemistry at Queen's University Belfast. He earned his science degree (BSc) in 1941.

A Career in Science

After finishing university, Patterson started working as a research chemist. He focused on studying explosives, which are substances that can cause a sudden, powerful burst.

In 1947, he began teaching geology at the University of St Andrews. Geology is the study of Earth's rocks and how our planet was formed.

Later, in 1954, he became a manager at Nobel's Explosive Company. This company was located in Ardeer, North Ayrshire in Scotland. He worked there until he retired in 1982.

In 1957, he was chosen to be a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a very old and respected group for scientists in Scotland. Being a member means his work was highly valued.

Personal Life

Edward Mervyn Patterson was married to Violet Adams. He passed away on April 11, 1997, at the age of 77.
