Eevi Huttunen: A Speed Skating Legend

Eevi Huttunen was a Finnish speed skater who made a big mark in her sport. She was born in Karttula, Finland. Eevi was especially good at long-distance races, showing great power and stamina.

For about ten years, Eevi was one of the very few female skaters who could truly compete with the strong athletes from the Soviet Union. She often stood out as the best non-Soviet skater in major competitions, especially in the longer races.

World Champion and Olympic Medalist

Eevi competed in the World Allround Speed Skating Championships many times. These championships were the biggest international events for women's speed skating back then. She participated almost every year from 1948 to 1960.

In 1951, Eevi achieved her greatest victory. She won the World Allround Championship in Eskilstuna, Sweden! This meant she was the best overall female speed skater in the world that year. At that championship, she won gold medals in the 1000m, 3000m, and 5000m races.

Eevi also made a special return to competition for the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, USA.
