Karttula was once a small town, or 'municipality', in Finland. It joined with the bigger city of Kuopio on January 1, 2011. So, now it's part of Kuopio.
Karttula was located in a part of Finland called Northern Savonia. In late 2010, about 3,483 people lived there. The land area was about 473 square kilometers. Almost everyone in Karttula spoke Finnish.
When Karttula joined Kuopio, the city of Kuopio kept its original name and its special symbol, called a coat of arms.
A Look Back: Karttula's History
Karttula was first mentioned a long time ago, in the 1620s. Back then, it was part of a larger church area called Tavinsalmi. This area later became known as the Kuopio parish. The name 'Karttula' actually comes from a family name, Karttunen.
In 1769, Karttula got its own small church, which is called a 'chapel'. This was an important step for the community! Then, in 1862, it became its very own independent church area, or 'parish'. This meant it had its own church and religious services, separate from Kuopio.
