A Look at the Old Courthouse
This historic building has a fascinating story. It was once a very important place for the local government.
Building History and Design
Construction on the courthouse began in 1870 and finished in 1871. It cost about $30,000 to build, which was a lot of money back then! The building's style is called Second Empire. This type of architecture was very popular in the United States during the late 1800s. It came from France, where it was used during a period known as the Second Empire.
Changes Over Time
The outside of the building has had only a couple of small changes.
- In 1913, the tall bell tower was updated. It changed from the fancy Second Empire style to a simpler square shape with a pointed roof.
- Later, a door on the southeast side was changed. This made it easier for people with disabilities to enter. A small roof was also added over this door to protect it from rain.
From Courthouse to Museum
For many years, the building served as the county courthouse. It was where important legal decisions were made.
A New Government Center
In 2007, Effingham County built a brand new building. This new place is called the Effingham County Government Center. It's located just one block west of the old 1871 courthouse. Once the new center was ready, the old courthouse was no longer needed for government work.
Becoming a Museum
After sitting empty for a few years, the old courthouse found a new purpose. In 2012, it began its new life as a museum. Now, it's a place where people can visit and learn about the history and culture of Effingham County. The building has been recognized as an important historical site. It was added to the US National Register of Historic Places in September 1985.
