Efigenio Ameijeiras Delgado (born September 21, 1931 – died February 10, 2020) was a Cuban military commander. He was closely connected to Fidel Castro starting in the 1950s. His father was from Spain, and his mother was from Cuba. When he was four years old, his father disappeared. His mother then raised her children by herself.

Life and Role in the Revolution

Efigenio Ameijeiras was born in September 1931. He was part of Castro's group of fighters. This group became known as the 26th of July Movement. The movement was named after an attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953. One of his brothers, Juan Manuel Ameijeiras, was involved in that attack. He was sadly killed soon after.

Efigenio Ameijeiras helped start the first secret group of the July 26 Movement. He was also part of the Granma Expedition. This was a trip by yacht from Mexico to Cuba in December 1956. There were 82 fighters on board, including Castro and Ameijeiras.

He fought with the fighters in the Sierra Maestra mountains. He took part in an attack on the El Uvero barracks in May 1957. In 1958, he led a company of fighters in Guantánamo Province. He became a Commander of the Revolution.

After the Revolution

After the Cuban Revolution ended on January 1, 1959, Ameijeiras took on new roles. He became the Head of the National Revolutionary Police. In April 1961, there were air attacks on Cuban airfields. He then led efforts to round up and hold many people suspected of opposing the government.

During the Bay of Pigs Invasion in April 1961, he played a key part. He commanded a group of about 200 police and militia members. They moved towards Giron and faced attacks. His accounts of the fighting at Playa Giron are well-known.

He continued to serve in the Cuban Army. He reached high ranks, including Major General and Brigadier General. From 1963 to 1964, he led Cuban troops sent to help Algeria. This was during its border conflict with Morocco.

Later Life and Legacy

Efigenio Ameijeiras studied history and graduated from the University of Havana. He wrote a series of books about his experiences. In 2001, he received the title of Hero of the Republic of Cuba. This is a very high honor.

He passed away in February 2020 at the age of 88. His ashes were placed in the Veterans Pantheon. This is located in the Colon Cemetery, Havana.
