Egan, Iowa facts for kids
Egan is a small, unincorporated community located in Allamakee County, Iowa, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government or mayor like a city or town would. Instead, it's usually managed by the larger county government.
The Story of Egan's Post Office
Egan has a short but interesting history, mainly centered around its post office. In the year 1900, a post office was officially opened in Egan. This was an important place where people could send and receive letters and packages.
The post office was named after the very first person in charge of it, who was called the postmaster. His name was James Egan. However, the post office didn't stay open for very long. It was closed down just three years later, in 1903. Even though it was only open for a short time, the name "Egan" stuck with the community.
