Egg Hill is a long hill located in southern Centre County, Pennsylvania. It stretches from the northeast to the southwest. Most of the hill is covered in trees, and very few people live there. A stream called Sinking Creek flows along its northern side. The town of Spring Mills is found at the northeastern end of the hill.

At the southwestern end of the hill, you can find the historic Egg Hill Church.

What is Egg Hill?

Egg Hill is a natural landform, a type of hill that is longer than it is wide. It's an important part of the landscape in Centre County. The hill is mostly covered by forests, making it a green and natural area.

Where is Egg Hill Located?

Egg Hill is in the central part of Pennsylvania. It's close to the town of Spring Mills, which is at its northeastern tip. The hill is also near a stream called Sinking Creek, which runs along its northern edge.

The Historic Egg Hill Church

The Egg Hill Church is a special building located at the southwestern end of the hill. This church has a long history and is an important landmark in the area.

How Egg Hill Formed

The shape of Egg Hill is closely linked to the geology of the area. Geology is the study of Earth's physical structure and substances.

The Rocks of Egg Hill

The very top, or crest, of Egg Hill is made of a type of rock called the Bald Eagle Formation. This rock formed a very long time ago, during a period called the Ordovician Period. The Ordovician Period was about 485 to 443 million years ago! The Bald Eagle Formation is mostly made of sandstone, which is a rock formed from tiny grains of sand pressed together over millions of years.

Folds in the Earth

Egg Hill sits on a special kind of rock fold called a syncline. Imagine pushing a rug from both ends; it would create a dip or a trough. A syncline is like a dip in the layers of rock. This syncline is part of an even bigger folded area called the Nittany Anticlinorium. An anticlinorium is a large upward fold in the Earth's crust that contains smaller folds within it. So, Egg Hill is a smaller dip within a much larger upward fold.

Height of Egg Hill

The top of Egg Hill reaches an elevation of over 1,900 feet (580 m) above sea level. This makes it a noticeable feature in the landscape of Centre County.
