The Eggerss–O'Flyng Building is a historic place in downtown Omaha, Nebraska. You can find it at 801 South 15th Street. This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. It was also named an Omaha Landmark in 1992.

Building History

This building was constructed in different parts. Work started in 1902 and finished in 1928. For 50 years, it was the main office for the Eggerss–O'Flyng Company. This company was well-known for making cardboard boxes.

The building was designed in a style called Renaissance Revival. A famous architect named John Latenser, Sr. helped design it. Back then, many businesses in Omaha built warehouses near the railroad. This helped them move their products easily.

The Eggerss–O'Flyng Company

The Eggerss–O'Flyng Company was started by August J. Eggerss in 1881. He was an immigrant from Germany. In 1903, Eggerss joined with Ivyl O'Flyng. O'Flyng became the company's treasurer.

A person named William Dennis Lane started working there in 1900. He was only 15 years old and began as a factory helper. Later, in 1932, he became the company president. He stayed president until the company was sold after 1950.

At its busiest time, the company had 225 employees. During World War II, they made special cardboard boxes. These boxes were used for things like bomb fuses and shells for the armed forces. For many years, they also made cigar boxes. Later, they focused on making boxes for food items.

Modern Use

In 1993, the building was updated and changed. This renovation cost about $3.3 million. It was turned into modern apartments called "loft style" apartments. Today, the building has 48 apartment units.

Besides being a landmark on its own, the Eggerss–O'Flyng Building is also part of a larger group. It's listed as an important building within the "Warehouses in Omaha Multiple Properties Submission."
